Gianni Infantino has given up on plans to sell World Cup shares with his own position as FIFA President now under serious threat.
Infantino has issued a statement that the planned sale of stakes in the World Cup will no longer be tenable.
“The FIFA Forward Enterprise project was intended to create a foundation to further strengthen our FIFA member associations and our sport worldwide, especially in those countries where support is most needed,” he said.
“Furthermore, we made it clear from the outset that this would only be implemented if a majority of FIFA member associations supported the initiative and it would always be done after a consultation process with them, the FIFA Council, the confederations and other relevant stakeholders.
“After carefully listening to all views, it has become clear that the project has created division of a kind that, regardless of the degree of support, is no longer in line with its original purpose. Our ambition has always been – and always will be – to unite and develop. Therefore, this proposal will not be implemented.”
