The Leone Stars of Sierra Leone are now just a point behind the Super Eagles in the qualifying tournament for the 2023 AFCON after a 2-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe today.
Sierra Leone remain third in Group A with five points from four matches, while Sao Tome remain rooted to the bottom of the standings with a solitary point.
Nigeria, who slipped to second place after a shock 1-0 loss at home to minnows Guinea Bissau, will now be hard pressed to get a result in Bissau tomorrow to stay clear of fellow West Africans Sierra Leone.
Another loss to The Djurtus tomorrow will mean the remaining ticket to the tournament proper will have to go to the final rounds of matches with Sierra Leone hosting Nigeria in one of these matches.
Guinea Bissau are top of Group A with seven points from three matches.
