There was some confusion as to the teams that qualified for the quarterfinal of the 2026 WAFCON from Group C after the final group games Wednesday night in which Super Falcons drubbed Egypt 6-2 and Zambia beat Malawi 2-1.
How the Super Falcons and Malawi advanced ahead of Zambia when all three teams recorded six point apiece after the three group games has now been explained.
For the Super Falcons, victory over Egypt only gave them three points and their six goals were not taken into account in the final placement of the teams.
Qualifcation was strictly based on the results between all three teams – Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia.
The Super Falcons fell 3-2 to Malawi, then beat Zambia 1-0 t end up with three goals for and three goals against for a goals difference of 0.
Malawi, on the other hand, beat Nigeria 3-2 and then lost 2-1 to Zambia to give them four goals for and three against for a goals difference of +1 and so they won Group C by virtue of having a superior goals difference than Nigeria.
Zambia are flying back home afer they beat Malawi 2-1 and lost 1-0 to Nigeria to give them two goals for and two goals against for a goals difference of 0, just like Nigeria, who enjoyed a better head-to-head record against the Zambians.
