NFF President Ibrahim Gusau today fired a salvo at the Super Eagles after they barely held lowly Equatorial Guinea to a 1-1 draw in their opening AFCON Group A match in Abidjan.
The Super Eagles were disappointing as they had to fight back from a goal down and must rue the several clear-cut chances they failed to put away on the day.
Gusau, who was accompanied to the Super Eagles dressing room by leader of the Presidential delegation George Akume and Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu among other top officials, blasted the team for not giving their best despite the support they have enjoyed from the Federal Government.
“After all the things the Government has done to support the team, you couldn’t play well,” a furious Gusau hit out at the players while also questioning their commitment to the national team.
“Is this how you play at your various clubs in Europe?”
He even threatened to bring new players in their place, probably to impress the VIPs who accompanied him to the change room.
However, coach Jose Peseiro defended his team, saying he is proud of what they showed today.
A source told SCORENigeria that the boys were far from impressed by “harsh” words coming from the NFF president.
They also insisted they are yet to benefit from the support of the Government as they have not yet been paid.
President Bola Tinubu has approved 12 Billion Naira to clear outstanding bonuses and allowances owed the Super Eagles and various sports teams who have represented the country in recent times.
