Cristiano Ronaldo will besides a suspension also pay a fine for walking out on Portugal recently.
Several media outlets including A Bola reported that Ronaldo will be suspended for 30 days and also pay a fine of 255 euros.
Ronaldo, 41, left Portugal’s national team training camp early in September and the Portuguese Football Federation subsequently announced that the forward was temporarily suspended while an investigation is underway.
According to A Bola, the punishment was announced by the Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary council.
Since Ronaldo left the training camp on September 30, he has already served 19 days of his suspension and will therefore be eligible to play during the upcoming national team training camp in November.
Ronaldo chose to leave the national team squad – after being left on the bench against Norway in the Nations League – and later spoke out on Instagram.
“After the match (against Norway) I just wanted it to be over with the victory and to be alone. I didn’t go out to greet the fans. A mistake for which I alone bear responsibility and which should not have happened. I apologise to the Portuguese who gave us such strong support on the ground, I apologise to the fans and I apologise to those who – without being Portuguese – might have traveled there to see me and whom I may have disappointed.”
The 41-year-old further claimed that national team coach Jorge Jesus had broken a promise to give him 30 minutes on the field in the match.
“He told me to be prepared because I would play 30 minutes. The rest is history. I warmed up after halftime, watched the minutes go by and didn’t get substituted. The national captain had broken his promise to me,” he wrote further.
“The press conference, as everyone knows, showed that his stance was not what we had agreed upon. I heard statements and was met with an aggressiveness that I do not believe I deserved. I then decided to leave the national team meeting without waiting for another broken promise.”
Ronaldo has scored 146 goals in 234 international matches for Portugal over the years.
The national team will gather again in mid-November, when matches against Denmark at home and Wales away await in the Nations League group stage.
