The next World Cup to be played in 2030 will have a record 64 teams, according to a top FIFA official.
Alejandro Domínguez, the president of the South American football confederation CONMEBOL, has suggested this expansion in a striking post on social media.
“The next one will be played at home,” wrote Domínguez on X. With this, he refers to the 2030 World Cup.
“It will be a great opportunity for football to celebrate the centenary of the tournament with a competition in which 64 teams participate.”
Spain, Portugal and Morocco will host the 2030 World Cup with a number of matches to be played in South America, where the first World Cups were staged.
South American countries are now pushing for a bigger World Cup for them to host more matches four years from now.
