The Super Eagles AFCON Group C opponents Uganda will be in Morocco with a very strong Belgian connection.
Besides head coach Paul Put, the Cranes of Uganda also have a Belgian doctor as well as a video analyst from the European country.
Chris Goossens, a doctor for Belgian football for many years, is part of the medical staff of Uganda.
Despite a recent injury, the 68-year-old doctor is ready for a new chapter on the African continent.
For Goossens, it’s a return to an environment he’s become very familiar with.
The doctor previously worked for Beerschot, KV Oostende, RSC Anderlecht, and Royal Antwerp FC, and was also the team doctor for Burkina Faso in 2013, when Put led that country to the Africa Cup of Nations final. That final was narrowly lost to Nigeria.
Remarkably, Goossens is currently recovering from a broken shoulder after a fall. However, according to Het Nieuwsblad, he will be fit enough in time to travel to Morocco and take up his role as team doctor.
The Belgian contribution doesn’t stop there: Jelle Sevenhant, video analyst for Dender, is also part of the Ugandan staff and will support Put during the tournament.
