Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo has said he has been left disappointed by a pay dispute in the country’s team at the 2019 AFCON.
A full-blown pay strike was only averted after captain Mikel Obi pleaded with the rest of the squad and they headed for training an hour late Tuesday.
Earlier Tuesday, vice-captain Ahmed Musa had stayed away from the official press conference as part of the pay strike.
Yobo said he was disappointed by this incident, but also wondered why all the things to do with bonuses and allowances had not been sorted out before the AFCON.
“I am disappointed (by the drama),” offered the former Everton star, who captained Nigeria to win a third AFCON title in South Africa in 2013.
“The team can be affected psychologically.
“I experienced this in my time as captain, but I also thought we had gone past that by now.
“I would have thought that all that had to do with money had been sorted out after the team had qualified for the AFCON.”
Despite the pay dispute, Nigeria secured their passage to the Round of 16 after their second straight win in Alexandria against Guinea Wednesday.
