Former Chelsea star Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has led more ex-Premier League stars to knock Manchester United signing of Odion Ighalo, saying it showed how far behind ‘The Red Devils’ have fallen in England.
Manchester United have taken Ighalo on loan till the end of the season following long-term injury to striker Marcus Rashford.
Hasselbaink said United have by signing the Nigeria striker again proved they are far behind Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.
“He (Ighalo) must be the luckiest man in the world – he was last at Watford two and a half years ago and then this loan move. It doesn’t happen,” the former Dutch star told SkySports.
“That says how much behind Manchester United have fallen to Manchester City, Liverpool and even Chelsea.
“He was not No 1 (target), I will be surprised if he was No 2, No 3.”
Hasselbaink maintained that United should have broken the bank and instead signed Danny Ings (Southampton) or Raul Jimenez (Wolves).
“Ings is flying at the moment and they should have thrown money on him or Jimenez from Wolves,” he said.
Former Arsenal star Paul Merson described Ighalo’s signing as “dangerous”, while ex-Barcelona and Chelsea ace Eidur Gudjohnsen said it is a great opportunity for the striker and he has nothing to lose playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world.
