Argentina have become the first country to submit a formal bid to FIFA to host this year’s U20 World Cup after Indonesia were stripped as hosts of the competition, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said.
Six-time champions Argentina did not qualify for the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup.
The South American nation hosted and won the 2001 U20 World Cup.
The FIFA Bureau will decide whether to accept the Argentina bid in the coming days with the tournament scheduled to start on May 20.
“We all know Argentine football and surely it can host a competition of this level,” Infantino told a news conference in Paraguay, where he will take part in the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) Congress later today.
