Officials have told SCORENigeria that a pay row involving the Super Eagles at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt has been resolved and as such the team agreed to train in Alexandria today.
Eagles May Boycott Training Over Pay
However, the Super Eagles were at almost an hour late for their training ahead of Wednesday’s Group B match against Guinea.
The players had earlier stayed away from the official pre-match conference for the game against Guinea in Alexandria after they demanded they be paid for the win over Burundi at the weekend.
A source close to the team disclosed: “The team captain spoke to the players, asking them to show some understanding after which the team agreed to train.”
Spokesman for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Ademola Olajire said: “The matter has been resolved.
“The NFF received part of the money meant for the tournament today and is in the process of converting it to dollars to pay the players and officials.
“The only money they’re owed is the win-bonus for the Burundi match.”
Another official informed SCORENigeria that the players have been paid a daily training allowance of $200-a-player from June 2 to June 30.
They have also received the appearance fee for the 0-0 draw in the warm-up game with Zimbabwe played in Asaba before they departed for Egypt.
Both the country’s team to the recent FIFA U20 World Cup in Poland and the women’s team to the Women’s World Cup in France also embarked on pay strikes to press for their entitlements.
The NFF’s defence has been that some of these major tournaments were not included in their budget to the government.
