Our man KOLA DANIEL catches up with Nigeria’s match winner against Guinea at the 2019 AFCON Kenneth Omeruo in Alexandria, Egypt.
The interview –
SCORENIGERIA: Are you surprised that the Super Eagles are already through to the knockout rounds of the 2019 AFCON with a round of group games still to be played?
OMERUO: I believe it is the way we came into the competition. First games are usually tough because you don’t know the tournament. Previously, adaptation took time, we got going maybe in the second game or third game, but this time we worked hard to make sure we won the first game and also won the second game.
It wasn’t easy, but I am happy we could do that. The most important thing for us is to take every game as it comes. It doesn’t matter if it is three or five goals, the most important thing is the three points in the match.
SCORENIGERIA: Would you say the performance of the team in Egypt has a bearing to what the players have done at their foreign clubs this past season?
This is very important because when you are in top form in your club, you are not taken by surprise because it’s the same football everywhere. You can perform better and be quicker.
SCORENIGERIA: How did it feel to score the match winner and be named Man of the Match against Guinea?
I feel very honoured, but I have to stay focused and improve on the last game. I want the next game to be better than the last one. For me, I am happy I won it, and the team won the match as well because it is very important to work together as a team to achieve our goals.
For me, I will stay calm and keep concentrating on the next game.
This was my first goal for the Super Eagles and I am happy it was at a major tournament like the AFCON.
