Defender Semi Ajayi scored his second international goal in the 36th minute, when he headed home off a superb delivery by Alex Iwobi.
Nigeria dominated as expected with the Taifa Stars mostly relying on the counter attack.
As early as the ninth minute Sevilla striker Jerome Akor was denied by the Tanzania goalkeeper when he went through on goal.
Two minutes later, the powerful centre-forward saw his header come off the crossbar as the Super Eagles continued to pile on the pressure.
In the 35th minute, Victor Osimhen rounded the goalkeeper, but his final effort was cleared off the goalline by a Tanzanian defender.
Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze will also get chances as the game wore on, but they failed to take any as the teams went into the interval with a goal separating them.
