Flying Eagles face an early elimination from the U20 AFCON qualifiers as they battle arch-rivals Ghana Wednesday in a must-win match without arguably the team’s best defender Christopher Nwaeze.
Nwaeze gave Nigeria the lead against Cote d’Ivoire Sunday, but he will later be sent off and will therefore miss Wednesday’s crucial game against Ghana.
This is a major body blow for the team led by coach Ladan Bosso as Nwaeze has formed a superb central defence pairing with Isaiah Ejeh.
SCORENigeria learnt that the place of the Kwara United will most likely be taken up by England-based Temitayo Ereku.
It’s a dicey situation for the Flying Eagles in the three-team Group B of the U20 AFCON qualifiers in Porto Novo as they now need to win on Wednesday to guarantee their place in the semifinal of the competition.
A loss on Wednesday will virtually eliminate them from the tournament, while a draw will mean they have to wait on the result of the final group game between Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire on Saturday to know their fate.
