This morning, the Flying Eagles stayed on course for a place in the knockout rounds of the 2025 U20 World Cup thanks to a stoppage time penalty goal by captain Daniel Bameyi against Saudi Arabia.
It was a dramatic finish to a pulsating contest with Nigeria edging it 3-2 to climb to third place in Group F on three points after an opening day loss to Norway.
Colombia and Norway are top of the standings on four points each after they played out a goalless draw in the group’s earlier fixture, while Saudi Arabia are bottom of the table without any points.
Nigeria will now play a final group game against Colombia Monday midnight in Talca, while Norway and Saudi Arabia do battle in the other group clash.
Nasiru Salihu put Nigeria in front with a powerful header in the 10th minute, only for the spirited Saudis to draw level 11 minutes later.
The Flying Eagles then regained the lead through right back Amos Ochoche on 38 minutes, but again Saudi Arabia restored parity in the 50th minute.
It was then left for captain Bameyi to put away a penalty four minutes into added time after a Saudi Arabian defender handled the ball inside his box.
