Bendel Insurance will represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup after they edged past rivals Enugu Rangers 1-0 to win this year’s Nigeria FA Cup Wednesday.
Rivers United, who finished third in the Nigeria league, will be the other club to fly the country’s flag in the Confederation Cup.
A goal from the penalty spot by Imade Osarenkhoe in first-half stoppage time proved to be the difference between two of Nigeria’s traditional clubs at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, southern Nigeria.
It was a deserved cup triumph by the club nicknamed ‘The Benin Arsenal’, who only regained their place in the Nigerian top league this past season.
They won a prize money of 15 Million Naira.
Insurance also beat Rangers 3-0 when both teams clashed in the 1978 edition of the Cup final.
It is their first major trophy since 1980.
