The coach of striker Jerome Akor at Montpellier has lashed out at some of his players for shifting their focus to next month’s AFCON and so not giving everything for their Ligue 1 club.
Akor has been linked with a first-ever Super Eagles call-up in time for the AFCON, while the likes of Wahbi Khazri (Tunisia), Falaye Sacko, Boubacar Kouyate (Mali) could also feature at the continental tournament next month in Cote d’Ivoire.
Montpellier coach Michel Der Zakarian has accused some of the players of putting the AFCON ahead of the club.
“There are some that are thinking more about AFCON than their club. They are paid by the club, they aren’t paid by AFCON. The guys need to think first and foremost about their club,” the Montpellier coach told RMC Sport.
The Ligue 1 club have been hit by notable injuries and their last victory was against Toulouse FC in late October.
They are 14th on the table with 14 points from 15 matches, just two points outside the relegation zone.
