KBVB, the Belgium FA, have issued a statement that they will not support the re-election bid of FIFA president Gianni Infantino partly due to his role in upturning the suspension of USA striker Folarin Balogun.
Balogun’s suspension at the 2026 World Cup was overturned after a phone call between Infantino and US President Donald Trump.
That meant the striker played against Belgium in a Round of 16 clash.
KBVB president Pascale Van Damme stated: “During and after the World Cup, my team at the KBVB communicated with FIFA in a calm and constructive manner to obtain clarity regarding the Balogun case.
“Two months after the events, we note that our questions remain unanswered for the time being.
“Given the importance of transparency and clarity for all parties involved, we request the necessary explanation and, at the same time, wish to examine where optimizations to current processes are possible, so that similar cases can be handled in a clear, consistent, and efficient manner in the future.”
The Belgium FA also said they were against the attempt by Infantino to sell shares of the World Cup to private investors.
“The FIFA Forward Enterprise dossier: The KBVB notes that, to date, insufficient insight has been provided into the underlying reasoning and decision-making regarding a number of important decisions and estimates within this dossier,” the statement read in part.
“This raises questions about the transparency and governance of the process. We remain aligned with UEFA and jointly request clear answers regarding the decision-making process and the next steps.”
