Fans of Genk have turned against their own player, Noah Adedeji, over his transfer to rival Belgian team Club Brugge.
The fans booed the pacy winger in a pre-season friendly against Dutch club FC Twente, which Genk won 2-1.
Adedeji, who has Nigerian roots through his father, has agreed personal terms to join Club Brugge, but the two Belgian clubs involved have yet to agree on a transfer fee for the player.
“Noah is doing okay. Of course, something like this is difficult for a young guy, feeling something like this from his own fans. On the other hand, this is also a learning process,” said Genk coach Jess Thorup
Thorup simultaneously made it clear that the player himself must also take responsibility for what happened.
“In football, you have to take responsibility for the decisions you make.”
However, the Danish coach will not want to drop his player. As long as Adedeji-Sternberg is under contract at Genk, he remains part of his plans.
“As long as he is here, I will do everything to protect him. And I will also continue to call upon him as long as he is here,” Thorup made clear.
