The European football union UEFA are now threatening legal action against FIFA boss Gianni Infantino.
There has been a lot of controversy surrounding FIFA President Gianni Infantino in recent days, after it emerged last week that he wanted to sell shares of the World Cup to private investors.
Plans that Infantino confirmed over the weekend had been scrapped – after a storm of criticism. Since then, the European Union UEFA have issued a demand that Infantino should either resign or fae a vote of no confidence.
According to The Telegraph, which has been close to the entire process, UEFA have threatened the FIFA president with legal action.
UEFA reportedly sent a letter to Infantino on Friday stating that the president is obligated not to destroy any material related to the now-rejected proposal to sell the World Cup.
The Telegraph reproduced parts of the letter.
“You and FIFA are required to take immediate steps to identify, locate and preserve all documents and electronically stored information described in this notice and which are in your or FIFA’s possession, custody or control,” UEFA wrote to Infantino.
The letter then went on to outline a detailed list of what type of information should be preserved.
The demands include that high-ranking individuals within FIFA, such as Arsène Wenger (FIFA’s head of global football development), Swede Mattias Grafström (general secretary) and Kevin Lamour (FIFA’s chief operating officer), should also preserve and produce relevant documents relating to the proposal to sell shares of the World Cup.
UEFA, CONCACAF (North & Central America) and AFC (Asia) have all come out and criticized Infantino for the now rejected proposal.
At the same time, the Qatar Football Association, among others, has come out and supported the FIFA President.
