While the pressure on FIFA boss Gianni Infantino seems to be mounting, he is receiving support from political quarters. According to quality newspaper The Telegraph, US President Donald Trump is prepared to ‘do whatever it takes’ to save Infantino’s job.
Infantino is currently under immense pressure due to his FIFA Forward Enterprise plan.
This plan was intended to sell World Cup rights through a new company that would be set up by FIFA. FIFA member states would receive more money, but Infantino could also make money from it himself. Because it is not a ‘non-profit organization’, he could pay himself a handsome salary. The Times previously reported that he had his eye on a salary of 30 million.
However, the plan has since been abandoned, and several continental football associations have exerted pressure on Infantino, who is being asked to step down.
Sources close to the White House told The Telegraph that Donald Trump would like to help him.
“Gianni helped us tremendously to stage the best World Cup ever. The president has great appreciation for him. I am sure the president will do everything he can to help him,” the source said.
