‘The Flying Antelopes’ leapfrogged second-placed Rivers United with 54 points from 31 matches.
However, Rivers United could regain the top spot later today should they beat fellow front runners Nasarawa United in Lafia.
Nasarawa United are fourth in the standings with 47 points and a home win today would give their title hopes a major boost.
Ikorodu United are third on the table with 49 points after a thrilling 2-2 draw at bottom team Kun Khalifat.
At the other end of the table, defending champions Remo Stars recorded a big home win over Kwara United to move closer to safety.
They have 36 points from 31 matches, same as Enyimba and Wikki Tourist.
Enyimba fell 2-0 at Kano Pillars to now be flirting with relegation.
There were also home wins for Katsina United and Plateau United.
