The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have announced the indefinite suspension of the country’s premier league following the tragic death of Nasarawa United defender Chineme Martins at the weekend.
Martins, 22, slumped and died during Sunday’s league clash against Katsina United at the Lafia Township Stadium.
Lack of proper medical support has been blamed for what the country’s sports minister described as “regrettable and avoidable” death.
“The NFF has ordered for the onward suspension of the league matches until there is medical equipment compliance at different league venues,” said a statement by the football federation.
Clubs have therefore been directed to ensure there is full compliment of medical equipment and personnel at all match venues not later than March 14.
A date for the restart of the league was not mentioned.
Twenty-three rounds of matches have so far been played in the 20-team championship.
Plateau United lead the standings with 43 points from 23 matches.
The Nigeria league has continued to be bedeviled by hooliganism, allegations of match fixing, breaches of contract by both clubs and players as well as lack of local interest and sponsorships.
