The Super Eagles have qualified for the continental Playoffs for the 2026 World Cup, but they would have won an automatic ticket to the Mundial had Augustine Eguavoen remained in charge of the team.
Former Super Eagles captain Sylvanus Okpala said he made a formal application to the authorities that Eguavoen lead the team for the World Cup qualifiers following the resignation of Finidi George in June 2024.
“Eguavoen stablised the team after he took over from Finidi and he would have qualified us to the World Cup by winning the remaining six qualifiers,” ‘Quick Silver’ Okpala said on a radio interview.
“I proposed that I assist him, just I did Stephen Keshi and we won the 2013 AFCON.
“I also asked that I should not be paid any salary, but a qualification bonus when we would have reached the World Cup.”

Quick Silver’ Okpala was very technical on the pitch as footballer and a coach . But I’m surprised hearing him mention Austin Eguavoen to have qualified us to the world cup. Can we look at Nigeria performance under Eguavoen all these years as FIFA technical adviser to Nigeria and tell us his contributions. Please bros (Silver Okpala) let’s drop sentiment about who Eguavoen was he can’t lead supper eagles.
