Coach Jose Peseiro has said his next target is for the Super Eagles to win their AFCON qualifying group after they advanced to the tournament proper at the expense of Sierra Leone at the weekend.
The Super Eagles qualified for the 2023 AFCON Sunday in Monrovia, Liberia, on the back of a 3-2 win against Sierra Leone.
They thus regained top spot in Group A on 12 points, while Guinea Bissau dropped to second place on 10 points.
Nigeria will next welcome bottom team Sao Tome and Principe to Uyo on September 4, same day Guinea Bissau will tackle Sierra Leone at home.
At least a draw with Sao Tome will ensure top place for Nigeria.
“We are the best in the qualifying group and now we want to finish first,” Peseiro said on social media soon after the win over Sierra Leone.
“Mission accomplished! We are qualified for AFCON 2023.
“A well-deserved victory against a great opponent on a difficult field.
“Congratulations to the whole team for the work and effort.”
