After a disastrous 2026 World Cup campaign, where they lost all three group games, Tunisia are again in the news for the wrong reason after eight of their players tested positive in a doping control at the tournament.
The Daily Mail has reported that several Tunisian players may have unknowingly ingested doping. After eating meat containing clenbuterol, eight players tested positive for the substance, which is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned list.
Clenbuterol is known, among other things, for its bronchodilating effect.
How did that substance end up in their bodies? In some countries, including Mexico, clenbuterol is still used as a growth promoter in livestock. As a result, unintentional contamination is not uncommon.
The affected players are not expected to be sanctioned.
