CAF named Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as the Man of the Match in Nigeria’s opening AFCON 2019 Group B match against Burundi.
The Eagles star played the entire game in a three-man midfield that also started captain Mikel Obi and Oghenekaro Etebo both playing a more attacking role than Ndidi.
Ndidi therefore did a lot of the dirty work and members of the CAF Study Group for the AFCON picked him their most outstanding player as the Eagles got off to a tough, but winning start.
Villarreal youngster Samuel Chukwueze and match winner Odion Ighalo also caught the eyes of many fans.
“The match was difficult as we let them take control, but all round we did well,” Ndidi himself said of the Eagles opening game in Alexandria.
