According to the FCT FA Chairman, Adam Mouktar Mohammed, the Super Eagles and the country’s other national teams are not getting the results lately because the domestic leagues have failed to produce the talent for these teams.
The Super Eagles recently fell at home to minnows Guinea Bissau and are yet to qualify for the 2023 AFCON, while the Olympics Eagles crashed out of the qualifying race to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“Beyond the NFF and national team players and call ups, we have a dearth of talent coming through nationwide. We have seen a sharp decline in the quality of players and quality of the league, which has a direct effect on national team performance,” Mouktar Mohammed told Daily Trust.
The FCT FA boss said there is now an urgent need to re-organise the NFF technical department and to set up a functional Technical Sub-Committee.
“We are currently in a very dire situation in terms of our football results, it’s been tough. Some say we are in a state of emergency,” he said.
“A lot of things in the football technical department are wrong. This has been the case for a number of years. We need to reorganise a lot and structural changes must be made.
“We need as a matter of fact get the technical committee up and running and it must be very strict on Key Performance indicators. Coaches must be vetted properly and remuneration must be tied to results.”
He lamented that the failure of the Olympics Eagles has denied a whole generation of young players the chance to take their game to a higher level.
“The devastating loss in Guinea of the Olympic Eagles has resulted in Nigeria missing out on the next Olympics in Paris. A whole generation of players has lost the chance to shine on the global stage,” he bemoaned.
