Was Rohr right to overlook Belgium sensation Okereke?

Okereke tipped to be Club Brugge top star as new season begins

Today, David Okereke is the rave of the moment in Belgium after a sensational start to life with new team Club Brugge.

He has scored four goals in three league matches for the table toppers and also has two UEFA Champions League games under his belt.

It is not just his goals that have got people talking, but the class and style he has shown that it is now widely argued he was a bargain buy at eight million Euros from Italian Serie B club Spezia.

Victor Osimhen – Flying start at Lille

He has been variously described as a complete striker, who not only knows his way to goal, but also has great work ethics and plays with the rest of the team.

The Brazilian Wesley Moraes scored the goals for Club Brugge, but he has since moved to Premier League club Aston Villa for 25 million pounds with fans saying he has not been missed because of what his Nigerian replacement has already produced.

Curiously though Okereke has now been left out of a squad that have players like Kelechi Iheanacho and Leon Balogun, who are yet to see action for their clubs this season.

Kelechi Iheanacho (right) still not playing regularly at Leicester City

Iheanacho, for one, still does not figure in the immediate plans of manager Brendan Rodgers even after a decent run in pre-season.

Does that then mean the Super Eagles is a rehabilitation centre for the country’s players who are struggling overseas?

Rohr will always tell you he has scouts scouring the whole of Europe looking for top Nigerian talent, week in, week out.

If that were the case, how would they have missed out on Okereke for next month’s friendly in Ukraine particularly at a time when the Super Eagles are shopping for a worthy replacement for the retired Odion Ighalo?

Ighalo – who will replace him?

Victor Osimhen, who has got off to a flying start in Ligue 1 with Lille, and Paul Onuachu, who showed glimpses of what he is capable of in an Eagles shirt, have been listed to jostle for the top striker’s position.

It must equally be noted that Onuachu is currently in the middle of a possible transfer away from his Danish club and so may not be fully tuned to national team duty as he tries to sort out his future.

Okereke thus ought to be part of this competition of who should lead Nigeria’s attack on the back of what he has also displayed in recent times, if current form is still a yard stick for selection to the Super Eagles.
