Gernot Rohr has revealed he has had to set aside his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation to accommodate more than a striker in the Super Eagles lineup because of the blazing form the country’s front men are currently enjoying.
Rohr used the 4-2-3-1 formation to qualify for the 2018 World Cup and also finish third at the 2019 AFCON with Odion Ighalo the arrowhead of the Super Eagles attack.
However, the red-hot form of Kelechi Ihenacho, Paul Onuachu, Victor Osimhen, Terem Moffi, Sadiq Umar and ‘Simy’ Nwankwo has meant Rohr has had to change his formation.
“We used the 4-2-3-1, but we are now using 4-4-2 and so Iheanacho played alongside Osimhen (for AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho last month),” Rohr disclosed.
“We have so many strikers doing well now, but we can’t start five of them at the same time, that will not be good for team balance.
“We will do it again (play 4-4-2 formation).”
Nwankwo, for one, has netted 16 goals in the highly-regarded Serie A, but has yet to be recalled to the Super Eagles since the 2018 World Cup.
“I know him very well, but the competition is very stiff and difficult for Nwankwo,” Rohr defended.
