The Super Falcons today cruised to the Round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup after they drew 0-0 with a spirited Republic of Ireland in a final group game in Brisbane.
Nigeria finished runners-up in Group B with five points from three matches, while World Cup co-hosts Australia won the group after they trounced Canada 4-0 in Melbourne.
The Super Falcons will now face the winners of Group B, which currently has European champions England top of the standings on six points from two matches.
Qualification to the knockout round of the World Cup has now guaranteed each Super Falcons player $60,000 (about 48 Million Naira)
Republic of Ireland put up a big fight today against the nine-time African champions as coach Randy Waldrum had predicted.
However, the Falcons managed the game well to go into the knockout stage of the World Cup unbeaten.
Asisat Oshoala started this game and had a good chance to put Nigeria ahead in the first half, but her effort when clear on goal missed the target.
Early in the second half, Uchenna Kanu was denied by the opposing goalkeeper, who pulled off a top-class save to keep her team in the game.
