Star striker Victor Osimhen will miss next year’s AFCON after Napoli announced he has been ruled out of action for at least 90 days.
Osimhen today underwent successful surgery in Italy to repair fractured eye socket and cheekbone as a result of the injury he suffered Sunday at Inter Milan.
He will not be fully recovered in time for the AFCON in Cameroon, which kicks off on January 9.
Initial prognosis was that he will only be out for about a month with Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti even quoted as saying he expected him to be back by December 19 against Milan.
Osimhen was the Super Eagles top scorer in the AFCON qualifiers with five goals.
AFCON 2021 would have been his second major tournament with the Super Eagles after he played a bit role at the 2019 edition in Egypt.
He will also be sorely missed by Napoli, who are gunning for the Scudetto after their last conquest in 1990.
