Club Brugge captain was very critical that Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika suffered a “stupid” red card in a UEFA Europa Conference League semifinal clash at Fiorentina.
Onyedika was first booked after 58 minutes, before he was sent off three minutes later as Club Brugge lost 3-2 in Italy.
Club Brugge captain Hans Vanaken said Onyedika ought not to have made the tackle that got him sent off as the action was far off their goal.
“In the last half hour it was just survival after the red card,” he blasted.
“It was a stupid red card, although I think he might not have seen the first yellow card. However, the second is also 60 metres from the goal, which is not necessary.”
Onyedika was devastated after his sending off and will now miss next week’s UEFA Europa Conference League semifinal second leg against Fiorentina in Belgium.
Club Brugge coach Nicky Hayen said the Super Eagles midfielder was “in a mess” as he did not recall he had previously been booked before his second caution.
