The Super Eagles today managed a sweet revenge over Guinea Bissau after they won 1-0 to return to the top of a 2023 AFCON Group A.

On Friday, The Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau stunned hosts Nigeria also by the odd goal in Abuja.

The Eagles now have nine points from four matches, Guinea Bissau dropped to second on seven points, while Sierra Leone are on five points.

Sao Tome and Principe are bottom with two points.

The top two teams will advance to the AFCON to be played in Cote d’Ivoire next year.

In Bissau today, Moses Simon opened scoring after half an hour from the penalty spot after goal-bound Osayi-Samuel was fouled by his Guinea Bissau

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen was unlucky not to double Nigeria’s lead in the 59th minute when his shot came off the post.

He had two other chances later in the encounter, but failed to put them away.

In the 70th, substitute Joe Aribo was denied by the goalkeeper, who turned away his shot for a corner.

The home team came close on a number of occasions, but they were too defensive and on the balance of the play, Nigeria deserved their victory.

The win ended a run of four straight losses for the three-time African champions Super Eagles.

The qualifying series will continue in June.
