If there was a prize for the best Nigerian player in Africa, Tony Okpotu would have won by a mile.
Such was the red-hot form Okpotu bestrode Tunisian football with giant-killing US Monastir that would have turned two-time Goal King Michael Eneramo green with envy and ‘The Black Panther’ ended his Tunisian sweet romance, winning the top scorers’ award with 13 goals before he headed to oil-rich Qatar to secure his financial future.
‘The Black Panther’ will begin 2020 losing 1-0 to CS Sfaxien on February 9, but gathered himself to do the unthinkable for a modest club like Monastir, winning the top scorers’ award to book his place in Tunisian football history.
He was not only the Best Striker but also named Best Foreign Player in Tunisia to spark off interests from home and abroad.
He signed off 2020 in style, scoring 10 goals in 19 games, averaging an impressive 1.2 goal per game for Monastir and Qatar Sports Club, respectively.
He has already justified the $1.3 million Qatar SC splashed on him with four goals in the Qatar Stars League, including grabbing a poacher’s goal in the recent Doha Derby against league leaders Al Saad.
