Rwanda have handed the Super Eagles a lifeline in the race to the 2026 World Cup after they stunned South Africa 2-0 today at home.
Bafana Bafana were widely expected to record their second straight victory in Rwanda, but the hosts had a different idea.
Rwanda thus shot to the top of Group C with four points, while South Africa dropped to second on three points.
Nigeria are third with two points from as many matches, while Lesotho also have two points after they played out a scoreless draw at home with Benin.
The Super Eagles will get their qualifying campaign back on track with a win over visiting South Africa when the qualifying tournament resumes in June 2024.
They will also play away at next-door neigbours during that window.
The winners of the group will automatically qualify to the 2026 World Cup to be hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico.
