The NFF have confirmed they have opened discussions with Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro over a new contract after his initial agreement ended last month.
NFF technical director Austin Eguavoen disclosed talks have begun for the 63-year-old Peseiro to remain as coach of the country’s team at the expiry of his year’s deal.
“At the moment he is in charge (of the Super Eagles), we are discussing in-house and we are giving him conditions as well,” Eguavoen said.
“We are flexible, so it could be suitable for both sides and once we reach a common ground, why not?
“We know he loves Nigeria, we will give him that level playground as well.
“We want to reach a common ground, but if we can’t, we would also like to shake hands.”
Various reports have suggested that the main stumbling block as it concerns a renewal of the contract is his $70,000 monthly salary.
The cash-strapped NFF have failed to pay the coach regularly and they are now owing him for several months as a result.
Peseiro, who was appointed in May 2022, has qualified Nigeria to the 2023 AFCON, which will be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire in January 2024.
He has already received the approval of the team’s top star Victor Osimhen to lead the team to the AFCON despite doubts by the public.
The three-time African champions next game will be on September 4 against Sao Tome and Principe in a final 2023 AFCON qualifier to be played in the southern Nigerian city of Uyo.
The Super Eagles will then begin their campaign to qualify for the 2026 World Cup between November 13 and 21, 2023.
They are drawn in Group C along with South Africa, Benin, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Lesotho.
