SCORENigeria can exclusively report today that more details have emerged why Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was left out of the Super Eagles final squad to the 2025 AFCON.
A top source informed only SCORENigeria that Maduka Okoye made it clear that he will not be at Morocco 2025 if he will not be the Super Eagles No 1 goalkeeper, just as he is at his Italian Serie A club.
Udinese also communicated this information to the NFF, SCORENigeria further gathered.
“Okoye made it very clear that if he won’t be the starting goalkeeper at the AFCON, he won’t come for the tournament,” the source told SCORENigeria
“He said he would rather stay back at his club where he is No 1.
“He even got his club to inform the NFF of this condition.”
Maduka Okoye was No 1 at the delayed 2021 AFCON in Cameroon three years ago.
However, he lost his spot to Francis Uzoho after his blunder eliminated Nigeria by the Round 16 of the tournament.
Ironically, Uzoho has now been drafted to replace him for the forthcoming AFCON.
