Mainz 05 have said they wish to have Taiwo Awoniyi beyond his loan deal from Liverpool at the end of this season.
Awoniyi has been a man reborn since after the restart of the Bundesliga after the suspension of the championship caused by the Coronavirus Pandemic.
He scored his first Bundesliga goal at FC Cologne last month.
Today, he started against Augsburg but suffered a serious head injury that he had to be rushed to hospital.
Rouven Schröder, sports director of the German club, disclosed they have been most impressed with the Nigeria striker, whose loan deal runs out season’s end.
“We are very positive about him. He always goes for it and he is an example for team sport,” he told Bild about a possible extension.
“We wait for the last matches and then we will see what the next steps are.”
Awoniyi has previously played on loan at KAA Gent and Mouscron in Belgium as well as FSV Frankfurt in Germany and Dutch club NEC.
