Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter and La Liga boss Javier Tebas have lashed out at Gianni Infantino and believe that his time as a FIFA executive is over.
According to the pair, ‘football has been destroyed’ and it is time for ‘new leadership’.
In recent weeks, Infantino and FIFA have been under heavy fire.
During the World Cup, among other things, water breaks were introduced, the half-time break during the final lasted 27 minutes, and a phone call from President Donald Trump played a part in having a red card for American Folarin Balogun rescinded for the match against the Red Devils.
On his social media, Blatter, Infantino’s predecessor, reacted to the recent World Cup for the first time.
‘The longest World Cup has come to an end and has a deserved winner in Spain. On the way to the final whistle, the tournament has lost its credibility. Politics must not overshadow the sport. Now it is up to the fans, players, and federations to reclaim football and bring it back to basics under new leadership,” he charged.
Not only the ninety-year-old Swiss, but also La Liga president Tebas believed it is time for a new leader.
In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Spaniard lashed out and claimed that FIFA is ‘destroying football’.
“His time is up, but he is supported by the system and the federations. There is nothing more to say, is there? There is no opposing candidate, because no one wants to stand for election and then lose,” he stated.
Infantino will stand for re-election next year.
