Swedish club IFK Goteborg have admitted they stood to lose star midfielder Alhassan Yusuf as a free agent before his transfer to Belgian club Antwerp.
Yusuf, 20, still had a year left on his contract at Goteborg and could have walked out of the Swedish club a free player by next year.
This was confirmed by the club’s sports director Pontus Farnerud in an interview with Goteborgs-Posten. .
“It is always difficult when you end up in such a position with a player, who has commanded a lot of attention,” he said.
“We had a similar situation last winter with Giorgi Kharaishvili, when he also had a contract until 2022.
“If you know that there is one year left on the contract, it will be much more difficult. At the same time, there is always a risk that something could happen to the player.”
Goteborg can now smile to the bank with at least 1.5 Million Euros for Yusuf.
