SCORENigeria can also report that until three days ago, Victor Osimhen was certain to be one of two men to miss out on the 2019 AFCON, but now on the back of the growing fears over the fitness of Odion Ighalo, he is on the flight to Egypt.
Ighalo is the Eagles first-choice striker, but he has just recovered from a hamstring injury he suffered in China.
Doubts over his match fitness means new Eagles boy Paul Onuachu is now ahead of him to lead the Eagles attack in Egypt with Ahmed Musa also an option as a top striker.
Officials have now told SCORENigeria that coach Gernot Rohr has taken a gamble to pick Ighalo for the AFCON, but at the same time he has opted for an extra cover in Osimhen as a result.
Osimhen too has done well to book his flight to Egypt after his goals for the U23s qualified them for the playoffs to the U23 AFCON.
Rohr praised the young striker’s humility for dropping down a level for the country.
He has also enjoyed by far his most productive season in Europe by scoring a total of 21 goals in all competitions for Sporting Charleroi to seal his permanent transfer from Wolfsburg.
