World football governing body FIFA, the Super Eagles as well as the Nigerian Government have commiserated with the country following the deaths of several fans who died while watching the AFCON semifinal against South Africa.
On Wednesday night in Bouake, the Super Eagles needed a penalty shootout to squeeze through to the AFCON Final at the expense of Bafana Bafana.
However, several Nigerians including a top politician from the ruling APC Cairo Ojougboh and a Kwara State management staff Ayuba Abdullahi met their untimely deaths while watching the game on television.
“Our thoughts are with the family and the fiends of those who have tragically passed away as well as the entire football community in Nigeria. Rest in Peace,” condoled FIFA.
The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) through the sports ministry also mourned “fallen heroes” who died watching the Eagles match.
Among those it listed who lost their lives are a Youth Corps member and a Nigerian businessman based in Abidjan.
The Super Eagles observed a minute silence at dinner Friday in honour of those who died.
