FIFA President Gianni Infantino has stirred more controversy after his letter to the Argentina FA leaked.
He congratulated Argentina for finishing as runners-up in the 2026 World Cup, while praising their “professionalism”.
This comes while FIFA are simultaneously conducting a disciplinary investigation into the incidents following the final.
Spain crowned themselves world champions last week thanks to a 1-0 victory over Argentina, but tensions ran high after the final whistle.
Several Argentina players, including Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina, became involved in scuffles with Spanish internationals, overshadowing the celebrations.
FIFA are investigating, among other things, possible “offensive behavior, violations of the principles of fair play” and “misconduct by players and officials” during and after the final.
The leaked letter has therefore put the world football governing body under renewed pressure and threatens to further fuel the debate regarding the organisation’s neutrality.
