SCORENigeria can exclusively report that the NFF technical committee, which is saddled with the responsibility of recommending coaching appointments of the various national teams, is scheduled to meet on October 15 in Abuja to decide on the future of various coaches including that of the Super Eagles, Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles.
The Super Eagles will play their final 2026 World Cup qualifier against Benin in Uyo on Tuesday, October 14.
In January, Eric Chelle signed a two-year contract as new Super Eagles coach with the top mandate to qualify Nigeria to next year’s Mundial in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
The NFF could now trigger that clause to fire him in the likely event that Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup.
As first reported by SCORENigeria, plans are now afoot for the former Mali coach to be replaced by NFF technical director Augustine Eguavoen ahead of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco in December.
The contracts of both coach Manu Garba of the Golden Eaglets and Aliyu Zubairu of the Flying Eagles are also up after their respective teams came to the end of their campaigns.
Manu Garba failed for the second year to qualify the country to the U17 AFCON after the Golden Eaglets could only finish third at the recent WAFU B U17 AFCON qualifiers in Cote d’Ivoire.
Aliyu Zubairu’s time as coach of the U20s has also ran its course after the Flying Eagles crashed out of the U20 World Cup in Chile Wednesday night, when they were crushed 4-0 by Argentina in the Round of 16.
The NFF technical committee is likely to declare both coaching positions vacant, while inviting suitably qualified candidates to apply.
