Fans of Enugu Rangers are in grave danger of not watching their darling club play their home games at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu in the new NPFL season as the artificial pitch there has become “dangerous and not safe”.
The artificial pitch at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium is long overdue a change after it was first laid in 2009.
The turf has suffered from over use and lack of maintenance, with several patches liable to cause serious bodily harm to players.
The poor pitch and not a collision between players was to be blamed for the fracture Rangers striker Ifeanyi Egwim suffered in 2016.
A source informed SCORENigeria: “The pitch at The Cathedral is a high-risk one.
“It is very dangerous for those who play on it and it is also liable to be flooded as the drainage urgently needs to be redone altogether.”
Another source said, “If the inspectors do their work properly, they will not approve the stadium for the new season because of the very deplorable state of the pitch.
“The Enugu State Government has to do something about this.”
The revelation of the sub-standard state of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium turf comes at a time when several other NPFL clubs like Lobi Stars, Niger Tornadoes and Nasarawa United are also in danger of their home grounds being banned for not meeting the standards.
The LMC has fixed October 24 as kick-off date for the new NPFL season.
