Chidera Ejuke scored a goal and gave an assist in his new striker’s role and Hamdi Akujobi shored up the defence for SC Heerenveen to win 3-2 at FC Twente to snap out of a seven-game winless run in the Dutch top flight.
Ejuke is usually a winger but was converted to “an emergency striker” to score his team’s second goal after 48 minutes and then provided an assist for the third goal in the 55th minute as Heerenveen raced to a 3-0 lead.
However, home team Twente then staged a fightback with goals in the 65th and 72nd minutes.
Hamdi Akujobi was promptly drafted in after 74 minutes as Heerenveen stoutly defended their slim lead till the final whistle.
Heerenveen remain in 10th place with 33 points from 25 matches.
They face a tough test next Saturday when they welcome table toppers Ajax.
