Cyriel Dessers has sounded a note of warning to fellow Super Eagles teammate Paul Onuachu that he did not return to Belgium to sit on the bench at KRC Genk and so hopes to soon be starting games and by next season be top scorer of the league.
“It has been restless in recent months,” Dessers told Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad .
“With three different trainers (this season already), it is always a matter of adjusting and getting used to.
“I came here to be the first striker, but got injured. Paul Onuachu came in and all the balls go in.
“I only have to be patient.”
Onuachu is the leading scorer in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League with nine goals.
Dessers was top scorer in Holland last season and has so far started five league games and scored three goals in Belgium, but that was not enough for him to return to the first team after his injury.
“It’s a top club, the competition is fierce, so I know how it can go. I’m not angry about it. I also don’t like to think about the short term only,” he said.
“I have decided that I will be in the first team this season and give it a shot to be top scorer in league in the second season.”
