Ahead of tonight’s UEFA Champions League playoff between Rangers and Club Brugge in Glasgow, striker Cyriel Dessers has revealed that at least twice the Belgian club tried to sign him.
Super Eagles striker Dessers could make a surprise comeback against Club Brugge tonight after some bit of cheering news on his recent ankle injury.
The 30-year-old striker, whose father is Belgian, has previously featured for Genk, OH Leuven and Lokeren in Belgium.
“There were indeed two contacts with Club,” Dessers revealed in an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws. “Once when Leko was manager there, and the last time when I was playing for Cremonese. But that interest never materialised.”
He has not ruled out playing again in Belgium.
“Why not? It’s still too early anyway, but I’ve been living abroad for quite a while and I recently bought a house in Mechelen. There are a few Belgian teams I’m particularly fond of,” he said.
One of those teams could very well be KV Mechelen. The fans seem eager for Dessers’ arrival, having already spoken to him several times in the city.
“They asked if I’d like to play for Malinwa KV Mechelen),” Dessers laughed. “And I don’t think my wife and in-laws would mind either. Although we’ll have to see how that works out with my career.”
