Cyriel Dessers has been overlooked by the Super Eagles for upcoming AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone and the striker himself has given reasons why he has also lost his place in the Genk first team.
Saturday night, the 25-year-old Dessers who cost his hometown club a princely four million Euros in the summer was an unused sub in Genk 2-1 Limburg derby win over Saint-Truiden.
He has now said he should not have continued to play for the Belgian club even when he suffered a head injury in training.
“I knew how I had lost my place,” he told HBvL
“I kept playing after my unfortunate fall in training. I struggled with a headache for a few weeks, was never the same. It was also no ordinary injury like a swollen ankle. It took some time to find the right diagnosis.”
Dessers insisted his huge price tag does not give him an automatic shirt in the starting XI.
“That (transfer fee of 4 million Euros) doesn’t give me any special status in the team,” he said.
“When you see that a top player like (Anton) Griezmann is on the bench, do I have to think it should be different with me?”
